At Calvary Chapel Open Door, we desire that each believer be blessed with every blessing as they grow in the knowledge of the Lord. There is no better indicator of growth in a believer's life than in the area of giving.
"The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work." 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
When giving is done with a cheerful heart, it will also be generous. An important rule of thumb is not how much is given, but how much is left after the giving. God is not concerned with the amount of the gift, but the motive which lies behind it. All the money in the world belongs to God. My gift to Him does not make Him any richer, it makes me richer spiritually. Richer because I have come to the realization that everything I have is His, and my giving is because I love Him and want to give.
The formula for giving is found in 1 Corinthians 16:2. We see three principles:
1) My giving is to be regular
2) My giving is to be systematic
3) My giving is to be proportionate
The person who fails to honor God with his giving actually is robbing God (Malachi 3:8), not because it impoverishes God, but it denies the means for the support of His work and His ministers.
For the child of God who honors God with his money, God promises abundant blessing (Malachi 3:10, Luke 6:38) and provision for his every need (Philippians 4:19). Giving, then, is a key to growth in our new life.
May the Lord Jesus bless you as you take to prayer His desire for you in the area of giving.
